Lot 1539

1856-C. NGC graded MS-61. Here is one of the really scarce issues from the ever popular Charlotte Mint. The state of preservation is exceptional for an 1856-C quarter eagle, retaining full mint state quality and a good degree of eye appeal. Well struck and untoned. Let's not forget that we're talking about an 1856-C quarter eagle, which notably is always found on defective planchets, with small rough areas noted particularly on the reverse. The planchets were either poorly prepared in mixing the gold and copper alloy, or the planchet rolling mills were not properly cleaned leaving said rough patches in the fields of the coins struck. Thankfully any rough patches on the blank planchets were blended by the devices in those areas. A condition rarity in all grades of mint state, and seldom seen or offered this nice. Only 7,913 struck. Pop 8; 4 finer, 2 in 62, 1 in 63, 1 in 64. (PCGS # 7778) Value $8,000 - UP
