Lot 143

1812 S-290 R1 Small Date. PCGS graded MS-64 Red & Brown. Beautiful lustrous bluish steel and light olive with at least 15% of both sides showing slightly mellowed mint red. No spots, but there are several very light contact marks on the obverse including some ticks on the bust, front edge of the neck, in the field before the neck, and at the right corner of the mouth. A long, thin nick or pre-striking planchet line on the bust tip is the only mark that catches your eye. The reverse is nearly flawless with just a few trivial, well-hidden ticks. Nicely struck E-MDS, Breen state II, with die clashmarks on both sides, clearest on the reverse. Graded MS63 and tied for CC#3 in the Noyes census, his photo #34339. Bland says MS62 and CC#3 among the confirmed examples in his census. Our grade is MS63. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer and the only RB graded at PCGS. (PCGS # 36500) Value $40,000 - UP
