Lot 14

1794 S-44 R1. PCGS graded AU-55. CAC. Choice glossy medium brown and light chocolate. Mint frost covers the protected areas and this cent has superb eye appeal. No roughness or verdigris, just very light friction on the highpoints of the devices and a few minor contact marks. The notable marks are a small, dull nick on the neck and a tiny dig over the 9 in the date. The reverse is flawless. M-LDS, Breen state IV late. The crack through the cap to the 17 is strong and a fine radial die crack reaches from the rim to the top of the Y in LIBERTY. There is a partial double profile from the forelock to the chin as often seen on this variety. Graded EF45 and tied for CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #20812. Bland says EF45 and tied for CC#5 in his census. Our grade is EF45. A beautiful 1794 cent. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; 5 finer: 3 in 58, 2 in 63. (PCGS # 35597) Value $12,000 - UP
