Lot 135

1810 S-283 R2. PCGS graded MS-64 Brown. CAC. Very attractive lustrous medium brown and light chocolate with generous traces of mint red remaining visible on the obverse and at least 15% of the reverse showing original mint color. A beautiful cent with only a few trivial marks. The notable ones are a small planchet flake in the field before the mouth (as struck), a very faint horizontal hairline on the cheek, a thin diagonal nick very well hidden in the hair under the Y in LIBERTY, and a small spot of darker toning (not carbon) at the dentil tips under star 11. None of these marks is significant and the eye appeal of this cent is outstanding. LDS, Breen state IV. The dies are worn and flowlined and there is a clearly defined rim cud break from star 5 to star 6. Graded MS61 and tied for CC#1 in the Bland census. Noyes says MS60 and tied for CC#1, his photo #39130. Only 2 mint state examples have been recorded in either census. Our grade is MS63. The late die state may be seen as a negative factor because the finer details on the dies are weakened but the amount of mint color remaining visible is a big plus. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer. (PCGS # 36478) Value $25,000 - UP
Ex Heritage Auctions 6/1989:36 (where misattributed as S-282)-Tony Terranova-Stack's 10/15/1991:512-Robert Schick, Heritage Auctions 1/12/2002:5350-Douglas F. Bird Collection (includes the last 2 lot tickets).
