Lot 1208

1873. PCGS graded MS-65. Nicely toned with classic silver-gray hues, deeper tones to accent the devices, lighter hues in the fields. The strike is sharp throughout, with bold definition on Liberty's hair and dress folds, as well as on the eagle's finer feather definition. A classic gem and first year of issue of the Trade Dollar. These were authorized by the Congress in 1873 to be used as trade coins in the Orient primarily, but many ended up in circulation here in the states. Curiously the mood changed by 1879, and Trade dollars faded away only to see production as limited edition Proofs. Meanwhile the new Morgan style silver dollar was launched in 1878, and became a major force in our circulating coins for nearly 80 years hence. Pop 12; 6 finer, 1 in 65+, 4 in 66, 1 in 67. (PCGS # 7031) Value $7,000 - UP
