Lot 120

1805 S-268 R3. PCGS graded AU-55. Choice glossy medium chocolate brown and steel. The surfaces are perfectly smooth and quite attractive; satiny and nearly flawless. The only marks are a short, light pinscratch near the dentils right of the date and a faint diagonal hairline scratch on the cheek. MDS, Breen die state II, with faint die clashmarks at the throat but no die swelling on either side. The is the plate coin for the variety in the Breen encyclopedia and the 1991 Noyes reference on the early date large cents. Called AU50 net EF45 and finest known in the Noyes census, his photo #23075. Bland says AU50 and finest known by a full 10 points. Our grade is AU50. Comes with a nice provenance. This cent comes with a typed envelope from C. Douglas Smith where he states "Finest known by a goodly margin." Looks like his assessment has held up among EAC graders. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; none finer. (PCGS # 36430) Value $14,000 - UP
