Lot 12

1794 S-32 R2. PCGS graded AU-58+. Beautiful glossy medium brown and chocolate with slightly darker steel brown toning on the highpoints. Satiny mint frost covers the fields and protected areas on both sides and this cent has outstanding eye appeal. The only marks are some tiny planchet chips in the field before the portrait and the opposing area at ERICA (as struck). A small chip in the field off the upper lip may help identify this cent. This variety was struck with the dies out of proper axial alignment (the die faces were not perfectly parallel). As a result the strike is always stronger on the left and weaker on the right. M-LDS, Breen state IV, with strong die cracks and clashmarks on the reverse. The reverse is rotated 25 degrees CCW relative to a normal head-to-foot die orientation (rotations for this variety in various die states have been seen from 80 degrees CCW to 40 degrees CW). Graded AU50 Choice and tied for CC#4 in the Noyes census, his photo #20041. Bland says AU50 and tied for CC#4 as well. Our grade is AU50. This cent is plated in the 1893 Frossard-Hays and 1910 Elder-Gilbert references on the cents of 1794 and in Dr. Sheldon's Penny Whimsy. In addition the obverse is plated in Early American Cents and on page 13 of the 1979 Tom Morley grading guide for the cents of 1794 illustrating the AU55 grade for the variety. The edge of this cent is neatly lettered in yellow ink "H-18" two times (for Hays) and the "H" and "D" in HUNDRED are filled with yellow ink to signify ownership by Homer Downing. This is a wonderful 1794 cent and it comes with a fantastic provenance that has been traced back a century and a half. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 3 finer: 1 in 63, 1 in 64+, 1 in 66. (PCGS # 35561) Estimated Value $20,000 - UP
