Lot 1186

1795. B-5, BB-27, Rarity 1. NGC graded AU-53. Well struck with nice even toning on both sides. The color is a classic silver-gray with lighter silver devices, deeper gray in the surrounding fields. The surfaces are smooth and attractive, with minimal signs of handling or circulation. There are a few shallow adjustments on Liberty's head and curls, one crossing through her neck, but these were mint imparted and commonly seen on these early silver dollars. The planchets had to be within a narrow weight tolerance, and it was easier to roll the silver ingots to make the planchets slightly heavy, and "adjust" (file) off the excess silver so the planchets would fit into the narrow band of weight allowed. Then once the coin was struck most if not all of the file or adjustment marks would be blended into the surfaces.

Here is a fine example of this practice, with just a few traces of the original file marks remaining, but what's important is the depth of Liberty's curls and all the wing feathers on the eagle, including many of his proud breast feathers are present. This is a two year type coin with the Flowing Hair design and one of the most popular of our early type coins. A tough issue to find this nice! Value $10,000 - UP
