Lot 1147

1870-CC. NGC graded EF-45. Popular first year "CC" Mint half dollar. This is one of the most popular of the 1870 Carson City opening year coinage because its actually more available (in a relative sense) than most other denominations. The total mintage came in at only 54,617 struck,--but, from that beginning only 200 or so coins exist today. There's a couple of mint state examples, and similarly only a few that rate as high as EF45 like the present offering. In grades of EF and lower these are available for a healthy price. Here is a lovely steel to medium gray coin with scattered darker flecks on both sides. The wear is light and even, limited to the highest points of the design. This is a true numismatists coin, a condition rarity at the high end of the scale. Pop 8; 13 finer at NGC. Value $11,000 - 12,000
