Lot 1146

1855-S. Arrows. NGC graded AU-55. This is a rare coin in any grade, although CoinFacts reports they believe 500 or so exist today, these coins are nearly all circulated well into far lower grades. There are a couple of Mint State examples known, but these are clearly outliers. Only a few are known in the AU grades of this date, and despite a mintage of nearly 130,000 pieces these just simply did not survive. Here is one of the finer examples seen, with light even grey toning on both sides. Rather sharply struck too, wiht full definition Liberty's dress folds and the eagle is sharp as well, right down to his knobby claws. The surfaces are pleasing as there are no detracting nicks or marks from brief circulation. Clearly, this coin has been carefully preserved since the day it was plucked from circulation as a fine representative of this early San Francisco half dollar. This is a condition rarity that should not be overlooked by any serious date and mint collector. Pop 2; 7 finer at NGC. Value $6,000 - 6,500
