Lot 11

1794 S-28 R2. PCGS graded MS-64 Brown. Choice lustrous medium brown and light chocolate. The surfaces are satiny, the strike is sharp, and this cent has fabulous eye appeal. The best identifying marks are a pair of small spots of slightly darker brown toning in the field off the chin plus a few small puffs of reddish brown toning at the denominator and RICA. MDS, Breen state VI, with fine die cracks on the obverse and die clashmarks on the reverse. Graded MS60 and tied for CC#1 in the Bland census. Noyes says MS60 and tied for CC#2 behind an example that was double struck off-center, his photo #25248. Our grade is MS60+. (Note: The provenance shown for this cent in the Breen encyclopedia is incorrect. This is not the coin that was sold by Doug Bird to Chris McCawley in 1/1995. That was a slightly lower grade piece.) The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 1 finer in 66. (PCGS # 35549) Estimated Value $30,000 - UP
Discovered unattributed in a date set by Dennis E. Steinmetz (Steinmetz Coins & Currency) 10/5/1989-Douglas F. Bird Collection.
