Lot 1037

1801. NGC graded AU-55. This is a prized condition rarity at this lofty grade level. The surfaces show classical steel gray fields which offset the slightly lighter devices on both sides. Close scrutiny will marvel at the complete and full definition on Liberty's curls as well as the finer details of the feathers imparted to the eagle's outspread wings. A few faint surface hairlines are noted from long ago circulation, and we note that portions of the dentils on the obverse and reverse are softly impressed by the dies, and this is diagnostic to this particular variety (nearly always seen as such). There are no deep or distracting marks on the surfaces. Due to their diminuitive size, these half dimes are rarely found today in any condition to grade by the third party grading services, most are damaged from careless handling long ago, and no doubt the majority were simply lost during their years of service in circulation. Here is one of the nicest 1801 half dimes certified, and a desirable coin worthy of any advanced collection. Mostly untoned. Only 27,760 struck. Pop 2; 5 finer at NGC. Value $8,000 - UP
