Lot 1022

1912-S. PCGS graded MS-66+. A hint of lovely tone on both sides. The surfaces are bathed in creamy white luster and the strike is bold throughout. This is one of the key issues to the series, with a tiny mintage of only 238,000 pieces. This is one of the absolute finest known from that entire issue, unsurpassed by any coin in terms of quality. These San Francisco (and also the Denver Mint) Liberty nickels were sort of a test run to see if the branch mints could successfully coin the copper-nickel five cent coins (similar to the 1908-S and 1909-S Indian cents). Having passed muster with the officials, after reviewing these 1912-D and S nickels, the coinage of Buffalo nickels began at all three mints in 1913. Pop 7; tied for the finest examples graded at both services. (PCGS # 3875) Value $5,000 - UP
