Lot 101

1803 S-243 R2 Stemless Wreath, Doubled Fraction Bar. PCGS graded MS-66 Red & Brown. CAC. Lustrous mix of mint red and light bluish steel brown blending to light olive. About 20% of the obverse and nearly a third of the reverse show mint color, and this cent has fabulous eye appeal. The surfaces are satiny and the only marks are a pair of closely spaced nicks in the field over the bust. No spots, stains, or planchet flaws. Sharply struck E-MDS, Breen state II. Most of the earlier clashmarks over ERICA have been lapped off the die but the rim break right of TY in LIBERTY has not formed. Another superb cent in this great collection. Graded MS65 Choice and CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #33400. Bland says MS63 and tied for CC#1 in his census. Our grade is MS64+. The slightly finer example in the Noyes census and the equally fine piece in the Bland census (same coin) was offered as lot 186 in our 9/2008 sale of cents from the estate of R. E. Naftzger, Jr., and it realized $241,500. Difficult to estimate where bidding will end on this one. A superb example of the Stemless Wreath Doubled Fraction Bar variety of 1803. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; none finer and 1 of only 2 RB graded at PCGS. (PCGS # 36420) Value $80,000 - UP
