Historic 19th Century Large British Cache Pot Recognizing Hong Kong's Period as a Crown Colony of Great Britain, Chinoiserie Design. Remarkable and historic 19th Century British monteith cache pot with red British mark (Lion and Unicorn, Crown over Crest, established 1879) on base in glaze. After the two Opium Wars China had to cede Hong Kong to Britain in the Treaty of Nanking. As a result, Hong Kong became a crown colony of the British Empire in 1860. In 1898, the British signed a deal with the Chinese to lease Hong Kong, Kowloon, and the "New Territories" and over 200 outlying islands a lease that was to last for 99 years. This cache pot clearly is from that period, Hong Kong harbor filled with fishing boats, the architecture of the buildings very much of the period as seen in late 19th Century photographs with flags of other nations including Great Britain and the United States flying. The extremely detailed scenes completely wrap around the pot but the central image of Hong Kong is similar on both sides. Monteith design is trimmed in gold gilt as are the large handles. Inside the pot is a traditional Chinoiserie design of brightly colored koi fish swimming amongst floating water foliage. Absolutely outstanding and an exceptionally fine antique porcelain pot.

Cache pot is in excellent condition commensurate with age and measures 8 x 19 x 12" with no cracks chips or repairs. We note normal crazing and just some minor residue to one side inside the bowl. Estimated Value $1,000 - UP

Realized $780
