Russian Lacquer: Large Lacquer Plaque of "Prince Ivan and the Firebird" and Vintage, Mid-Century Lacquer Box. Two Russian lacquer pieces including a wall plaque, something we have never auctioned before. 1.) 13 x 5½" Fedoskino lacquer plaque that depicts a well known folklore scene "Prince Ivan and the Firebird". We have noted smaller boxes with this art, but the size of this plaque is impressive which gleams from the gold leaf, enamel, egg tempera and lacquer. There are some very light surface scratches and a small ding in upper right corner. 2.) An old lacquer box but how old we cannot say. It does have some minor flaking and crazing to lacquer. But the details in the painting are remarkable, the fabric, the wood cabin and landscape all with discrete gold highlights. The box 2¼ x 4 x 6½" is wood not paper mâché, box hinges not modern barrel hinges nor is it painted red on the inside but instead the same black as exterior. Further, the box has a lock (no key). Nevertheless a unique appeal and unlike any other piece in auction. Estimated Value $400 - UP
