Linday, Vachel. "Congo" with 8 Original Gouache and Colors Illustrations. (1879-1931) Poem by Lindsay Vachel, original folio and original art hand illustrated by Nicholas Zuraw. Lindsay Vachel was a white American poet and considered a founder of modern singing poetry (or poetry as spoken art) and was one of the best known poets of the early 20th Century. In 1915 he published THE CONGO, which exemplified his revolutionary aesthetic of sound for sound's sake imitating the pounding of the drums in the rhythms in his words. Offered is a remarkable find of using a portion of THE CONGO: Section One, as a means in creating incredibly striking watercolors by artist Nicholas Zuraw. We cannot find information on the artist but his 8 original gouache-on-paper illustrations and the cover in this folio are extraordinary. Beneath each illustration he has carefully written stanzas from Lindsay's poem in pencil with fine precision. Based on the toning of the mat paper, this original art piece must be pre-WWII if not older. Each illustration is shee-matted but loose inside the striking illustrated black paper cover. A remarkable work that belongs in a prestigious collection of African American history of the 20th Century. A unique and fascinating original work. Estimated Value $400 - UP
