Diego Rivera: Celebrated and Important Mexican Artist of the 20th Century "Campesino". (1886-1957) Born Diego María de la Concepción Juan Nepomuceno Estanislao de la Rivera y Barrientos Acosta y Rodríguez in Guanajato, Mexico, Rivera became through his paintings and murals one of the most celebrated and popular artist in the 20th Century. He was historically also known for his volatile marriage to Frida Kahlo an equally gifted and controversial artist, their relationship and art the subject of novels, biographies and film. This is the first piece by Rivera ever offered for by Goldberg Auctions and it is very much a subject that he favored. He was very involved in social politics (as was Kahlo) and frequently his art combined images of the Mexico's Pre-Columbian past, The Revolution and the customs and daily lives of the people especially with images of the workers in the field and the factory. This charcoal on paper captures his vision beautifully "Campesino" or peasant farmer. Artwork measures 15½ x 10½" is signed by Rivera in lower left and has been professionally framed under glass, matted and framed to 23 x 18½" in salvaged, distressed wood which perfectly compliments the artwork.
