Birket Foster (Myles): Popular English Watercolorist and Illustrator of the Victorian Era. (1825-1899) In his lifetime of painting, Birket Foster painted great numbers of landscape scenes from Scotland to the Mediterranean. But it was after moving to Witley that Birket Foster produced the works for which he is best known - a sentimentalized view of the contemporary English countryside, particularly in the west Surrey area. His works were recognized for their detail and execution and so popular that they were used by Cadbury on their chocolate box covers from 1860 on. A fine example of his work here of cattle grazing near a pond, the leaves just beginning to turn colors, a chill in the air. These idyllic works of England became very popular as the ravages of the Industrial Revolution began to despoil cities in noxious air, dust, soot and smoke. They proved an escape to a more romantic time. Watercolor measures 11 x 18" handsomely matted and framed to 22 x 27". Signed monogram at lower left. Watercolor is in excellent condition, as examined in frame. Estimated Value $1,500 - UP
