Lot 1312

1857, 12¢ black, plate I "Variety" Pair On Cover. Scott 36. Horizontal pair on folded letter from Philadelphia dated "3rd mo 7th 1858" to Great Malvern, England (March 24 receiving mark on the back), with the left stamp showing the eyes appear to be looking in a different direction. This "discovery" was described extensively in the accompanied Feb 1967 Linn's Stamp News article as well as in various correspondence among Mortimer Neinken, who was the expert on this issue, H.L. Lindquist and Lester Brookman (all articles and correspondence are included with this item), with the consensus being that it is a printing instead of plate variety. A very interesting and unusual cover. Estimated Value $500 - UP
From The Celebrated Collection of Alden T. Barnes.

Realized $408
