Lot 41

1818 N-6 R1 PCGS graded AU55. Lustrous medium brown and very attractive except for a doughnut-shaped spot of dark olive brown toning on the jaw. Satiny mint frost covers the fields and protected areas on both sides, but there is a hint of friction on the highest points of the portrait. M-LDS with the usual die crack that meanders through much of the legend outside the wreath. In addition there are dull but clearly visible lapping lines through CA in AMERICA. Strike doubling shows on several elements of the obverse including the nostrils, jaw, truncation, and many of the stars (a result of die shift or bounce, not a doubled die). Graded MS60 by Noyes, his photo #24345. Our grade is net AU55. Comes with a nice provenance that includes several prominent collectors of large cents. Estimate Value $600 - UP
