1822 N-14 R7- PCGS graded G4. The obverse is better, the reverse weaker (perhaps a 5+/3- split). The obverse is smooth while the reverse shows a few small, shallow pits, strongest around the O in OF. No verdigris and just a few minor contact marks. The notable ones are a pair of rim nicks behind the head and another over the D in UNITED. The date is strong and the legends on the reverse are mostly clear, although portions are weak or worn away. This was the fourth example discovered of the variety (Rick DeSanctis 1995), and was the first one ever sold at auction (McCawley & Grellman Auctions 1/6/1996:340). Several more have been found since then and the total is now 12 with this being the 6th finest of that group. Most of the pieces are in very low grade and the finest is only F12. Our grade is G4, same as the PCGS grade. Noyes photo #34589. A rare opportunity for the serious collector of middle date large cents. The finest known graded net F12 brought $48,875 in the Rasmussen sale (Heritage 1/13/2005:3476) and the net G5 in the Holmes sale (Goldberg 5/30/2010:173) brought $20,700.
