1828 N-4 R4 NGC AU Details Environmental Damage. Slightly glossy medium brown and light chocolate with darker olive brown toning in the most-protected areas. Looks smooth to the unaided eye but a glass reveals very fine granularity covering the planchet. There are a few shallow contact marks high on the neck near the earlobe and a small spot of raised verdigris at the bottom of the inner hair bun. The color and eye appeal are better than you would expect for a piece with imperfect surfaces. MDS. Both dies are worn from use in earlier marriages, as always seen on this die variety. Called VF35 net VF20 and tied for CC#5 in the Bill Noyes census, his photo #21423. Del Bland says net VF25 and tied for CC#3. Our grade is VF30+ sharpness net VF20. Comes with a great provenance that includes a couple of the most famous collectors of large cents. The attribution and Mervis provenance are noted on the NGC label. Estimate Value $1,200 - UP
