Lot 1

1816 N-1 R4 PCGS AU Details Tooled. Attractive frosty medium steel brown and light chocolate with a wisp of slightly darker olive brown toning from the nose down to star 2. The eye appeal of this cent is excellent but a glass reveals traces of extremely fine roughness on both sides, strongest around star 7. No verdigris, and the only notable marks are a couple dull, faint scratches in the field before the portrait (these may be the cause of the "Tooled" assessment). Rare E-MDS with a single rim cud break over star 10. A few examples are know without any cuds but most of this variety have a series of rim cud breaks from star 8 down to star 11. Graded net VF30 in the Noyes census, his photo #35644. Our grade is EF40+ sharpness net VF30. A decent example of this tough die variety that is tied for tenth finest known in the Noyes census. The attribution and Twin Leaf Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. Estimate Value $1,000 - UP
