Japanese Netsuke: Fine 19th Century Boxwood Carving of a Man Resting Against a Large, Tied Bundle or Bag. As the kimono, the traditional form of Japanese dress, had no pockets, Japanese men suspended small items they needed to take with them, such as tobacco pouches, purses, pipes and writing implements on a silk cord from their sash, and to stop the cord from slipping, it was fed through a toggle, or a netsuke. The custom of wearing netsukes flourished in Japan for more than three centuries (1600 to the mid 19th century) but the golden age of the netsuke is considered to be from 1800 to 1850. Offered is a finely carved, 19th Century and most unusual netsuke, unsigned, of a stocky man squatting, arms resting on knees, leaning against a large tied sack or bundle. In superior condition and quite appealing given the subject and how very well executed it is. 1½ x 1¼". Estimate Value $1,800 - UP
