Teletypes Regarding Attack on Pearl Harbor. On December 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor was the home port for the U.S.S. Chester, but along with the Northampton and Enterprise, she was at sea returning from Wake Island when the Japanese attack occurred. Offered here are four mimeograph copies of teletypes received by the U.S.S. Chester on December 7, 1941. Most are very faint; some parts are very difficult to read, but all are dated 7 DEC '41: (1) From CINCPAC (U.S. Pacific Fleet) to ALL SHIPS XX HAWAIIAN AREA: AIRRAID ON PEARL HARBOR X THIS IS NO DRILL / URGENT. Information has been written over in pencil. (2) From CINCPAC to PACFLT: HOSTILITIES WITH JAPAN COMMENCED WITH AIR RAID ON PEARL…URGENT…" (3) "EXECUTE ---(?) FORTY SIX AGAINST JAPAN; and (4) From OPNAV to COM 15 AND OTHER NAVAL DISTRICTS AND VARIOUS AIR STATIONS. THIS CONFIRMS AIRRAID BY JAPAN ON OAHU AT EIGHTEEN HUNDRED TODAY FOLLOWED BY A DECLARATION OF WAR BY JAPAN AGAINST U.S. AND GREAT BRITAIN. Fading throughout but still a historic grouping.

The Japanese attack on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor began just before 8 a.m., damaging or destroying 20 American naval vessels, including eight battleships, and over 300 airplanes. Over 2,400 Americans sailors, soldiers, and civilians died in the attack and another 1,000 people were wounded. On Dec. 8, 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared the attack "A day that will live in infamy" and asked Congress to declare war on Japan. Estimate Value $400 - UP
