Dreyfus, Alfred -- ANS by the Officer at the Heart of the Dreyfus Affair (1859-1935) Jewish artillery officer in the French army, falsely accused and convicted of treason in 1894. The Dreyfus Affair became a cause célèbre when Dreyfus was championed by Émile Zola and other intellectuals. Dreyfus was exonerated in 1906, having spent five years on the infamous Devil's Island, and restored to his rank of major in the French Army. Autograph note signed "A Dreyfus," 3½ x 4½", in French, Orleans, France, Oct. 5. [1918]. Three lines to M. et Madame Coblence, thanking "my dear friends" for their congratulations. Dreyfus had been appointed commander of the Orleans Artilleries Depot on April 5, 1918, and on Sept. 25, he was promoted to Lt. Col. Holograph address on postmarked verso, stamped "Dépot du Parc d'Artillerie d'Orléans." Estimate Value $300 - UP
