Music -- Group of Composers, Conductors, and Musicians. This lot includes items signed by Jules Massenet (1842-1912), French composer best known for his operas; Fromental Halévy (1799-1862), English-born pianist and composer; Henri Marteau (1874-1934), French composer and violinist; Giacomo Meyerbeer (1791-1864), German opera composer who created in Paris a vogue for spectacular romantic opera, as well as items signed by Ole Borneman Bull, Karl Youlevitch Davidov, Edward Remenyi, and Prosper Sainton.
Jules Massenet, Three autograph letters signed "J. Massenet," one in 1880, one c. 1905, and one in 1907. Content includes blaming his travels for not having received/answered letters, mentioning a piano concerto, and a project in the south of France; Richard Hoffman, autograph manuscript signed about the transmission of melodies from culture to culture, 5 pages, 9 x 5¾", in pencil, n.p., n.d. To the editor of "Century." Titled "How Cuban Dances become German Students Songs, and American ditties become Italian Mountainerrs melodies." With holograph corrections and at least one from the editor about the long title. Henri Marteau Autograph musical quotation from Massenet signed, "Henri Marteau," on 2¾ x 3¾" card titled "J.Massenet" below the quotation, February 17, 1898. Giacomo Meyerbeer autograph letter signed, "Meyerbeer", one page, in French, 7½ x 4½", n.p., Wednesday, n.d., explaining that illness has prevented his visit to "Mon Cher Maitre" since his arrival in Berlin. From Nowegian violinist Ole Borneman Bull (1810-1880), a card inscribed and signed; from Russian cellist Karl Youlevitch Davidov (1838-1889), an autograph letter signed in French, 5¼ x 4", n.p., n.d., inviting a neighbor to a performance; from Hungarian violinist Edward Remenyi (1830-1898), a signature on 1¾ x 5½" paper, n.p., n.d., with a few lines of a letter on the back; and from French violinist Prosper Sainton (1813-1890), an autograph letter signed, one page, 7¼ x 4½", n.p., n.d., regretting not being able to accept an invitation and explaining why. Small paper loss at left margin affects a couple of letters. Group very good to fine condition. Estimate Value $500 - UP
