From the personal property of Apollo Docking Module Pilot, Donald "Deke" Slayton (1924-1993), the rotational hand controller of the Command Module. ASTP was the last manned US space mission until the first Space Shuttle flight in April 1981. ASTP was the first joint U.S.–Soviet space flight, as a symbol of the policy of détente that the two superpowers were pursuing at the time. It involved the docking of an Apollo Command/Service Module and the Soviet Soyuz 19 capsule. It also marked the only space flight of U.S. astronaut Deke Slayton, who was one of the original Mercury 7 Astronauts. Controller was presented to Slayton, mounted on a walnut base with plates identifying from "ASTP July 15, 1975 - July 24, 1975" and identified as the "Rotational Hand Controller." Base is 8 x 5" and controller stands just at 4½" tall. Extraordinary, museum quality artifact. Estimate Value $9,500 - UP Loan Return From Exhibition at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex.
