Lot 916

1872-CC. NGC graded MS-63. Lovely sunset toning primarily on the obverse, the reverse with more reflective fields. This is a prized Carson City issue that is nearly impossible to obtain in grades even approaching this mint state jewel. Notice the satin surfaces with near perfection of the fields and devices, with just a few scattered nicks from long ago handling. The strike is bold throughout., right down to the feather tips on the eagle, and the dress folds on Liberty's gown.

While far and away the vast majority of the tiny mintage of only 3,150 pieces struck were melted or lost, it appears that most of these entered circulation and thus precious few were saved in Mint State. Given the mintage, lack of general interest in 1872 and 73, this Carson City issue remains one of the keys to the series, and finding a superlative, elegant and choice Mint State coin like this is more than a formidable challenge. Hence we recommend it highly! Pop 2; 4 finer, 2 in 64, 1 in 64+, 1 in 65. Estimate Value $50,000 - UP
