Lot 904

1798. Large eagle, close date. B-27, BB-113, Rarity 2. PCGS graded MS-61. Lovely deep blue toning with golden accents. This is a glorious Draped Bust, Heraldic Eagle silver dollar in Mint State. Precious few survive at this lofty grade level, particularly from the year 1798. Although this is a plentiful die pairing it is notworthy that this "high 8" obverse die was later paired with 7 different reverse dies, all of these reverse dies eventually failed with cracks and breaks, while the obvere kept on striking coins until the 7th reverse finally went to the scrap heap with this obverse die--in cracked and worn conditon. Curiously die cracks did develop early on in this multipile die marriage journey on this obverse die, but they remained stable and this workhorse obverse kept at it. On this particular die marriage, this was the first reverse die paired with the obverse. Hence both dies are fresh and offer sharpness seldom seen on later strikings as the parade of new reverse husband dies came along. Memorable and historic. Pop 5; 22 finer, 12 in 62, 1 in 63, 9 in 64. The coin will be Pop 1 with only 2 finer in 64 and 65 once the variety is recognized. (PCGS # 6873) Estimate Value $19,000 - 20,000

Realized $21,600
