1797. 15 Stars. LM-1, Rarity 3. NGC graded MS-65. Lustrous and smooth with lovely russet color around the obverse rims and throughout reverse, with the devices notably bright silver and contrasting with the surrounding fields. Incredible quality for the specialist, with a rather sharp strike for this issue as Liberty's curls show strong separation and the eagle shows many of his wing feathers. The central details are slightly soft, but show more detail than commonly seen on this early half dime. The Draped Bust, Small Eagle type coin was issued only in 1796 and 1797, hence precious few exist in any grade. This particular type coin has long been known to be one of the most difficult to find in any grade. Here is a stunning Gem example, and one of finest known too.
