Lot 60

1796 S-112 R4- Draped Bust, Reverse of 1794 PCGS graded AU55. Attractive frosty medium chocolate brown and olive with a subtle hint of underlying reddish chocolate brown suggesting this cent may have been lightly cleaned long ago. Well struck and the only notable mark is a thin diagonal nick at the upper left leaf of the wreath. E-MDS, Breen state II, with die clashmarks on both sides and a faint die crack through the top of NIT in UNITED. A very nice example of a variety that is unknown in mint state. Called net VF35 by Noyes and tied for CC#4 in his census, photo #34996. Bland says net VF35 as well but tied for CC#5 in his list. This cent is plated in the 2007 Noyes reference on early large cents. Our grade is net EF40 but it has the eye appeal of a higher grade. Comes with a great provenance that has been traced back more than a century. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. Pop 1; 1 finer in 63. Estimate Value $20,000 - UP
