Reverse; Scottish lion with sword and sceptre facing, perched on crown, thistle to right, St Andrew's cross to left. Date to sides. Above: FID: DEF IND: IMP. Designer's initials K and G (Kruger Gray) to lower left and right of lion. Edge reeded. A superb mint state matte specimen with strong detail and crisp edge. NGC graded Matte Proof 65. *1937 was the first year of the new currency heralding a completely new obverse design as the portrait of George VI replaced that of his father George V on coins intended for circulation. There were several examples of each denomination made by the Royal Mint as matte proofs, ostensibly to facilitate photography. Linecar and Stone lists a complete set of matt proofs, from gold to bronze coins, in a Glendining's auction of 4th April 1966. In the 1980s, when the Norweb collection of coins was sold by Spink, a set of silver and bronze specimens was also offered for sale.
