1854-O. NGC graded AU-55. Typical soft strike for this only $3 Gold issue of the "O" mint. From the orginal mintage only 1,000 or so exist today. As a date and mint, the 1854-O is virtually unobtainable in any mint state grade, with no more than a few known that merit that grade. Thus, all but the most well healed collectors try to buy a high end AU example like this piece to represent this date and mint. The strike is a trifle soft, but the surfaces are pleasing with minimal signs of handling. It is nearly certain that the vast majority of this issue did not survive the Civil War, with most melted and converted into newer gold coins along the way in the decades to follow.
