Sale 110

Lot 1154

1910. NGC graded Proof 67. A sharp strike with full definition at the top of the eagle's wings, an area seldom seen even approaching this sharp on business strikes of this date. Furthermore, the surfaces are fantastic, with the satin Roman finish that was more popular than the more Matte style of the initial output in 1908. These Roman Finish proofs have a blend between the matte and shiny finish of past. If you desire just one super gem of this series, then here is the perfect coin to pursue, with radiant mint color and just a hint of antique gold tone, with a perfect strike and virtually perfect preservation.

One of the facts that is worth knowing is that only a fraction of this dates production seems to exist. The mints records state that only 682 pieces were struck, yet approximately 135 or so exist. What happened to the balance of these? They were likely melted and never released, as this comparatively large production of proofs did not enter the marketplace--otherwise this issue would be somewhat common if that many were indeed sold to collectors. Today it appears that 1910 was more of a normal issue of proofs of probably 150 or so pieces sold, with normal attrition accounting for a handful of lost pieces today, but certainly not over 450 pieces lost! Bear these facts in mind when formulating your bid. Pop 10; 5 finer, 2 in 67 Star, 1 in 67+, 2 in 68. (PCGS # 7959) Estimate Value $50,000 - UP
