Goldberg Coins and Collectibles

Sale 110

Lot 1139

1830. PCGS graded AU-58. A nice untoned coin with reflective fields. The sufaces are pleasing and the color is classic yellow gold. The strike is sharp on Libety's curls as well as most of the wing feathers save for a few near the shield on the left side. Only 4,540 struck, with about 80 to 120 examples estimated to have survived by PCGS Pop Report. This is one of the so called Kneasss's modified Capped Head designs, issued from 1829 into the early months of 1834. The price of gold had risen to the point that these were worth melting for the bullion value and profit at their time of production, hence nearly the entire production was melted leaving precious few survivors for collectors today. Hence the rarity of these popular quarter eagles today. Pop 13; 39 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 7670) Estimate Value $14,000 - 15,000

Realized $14,400
