Lot 11

(1792) Washington Born Virginia with Stars over Eagle Breen-1236 Rarity-8- PCGS graded AU53. Copper with Plain Edge. Glossy dark chocolate brown and olive. The surfaces are smooth except for a bit of fine roughness and dirt nestled around the legend off the tip of the bust. The only contact marks are a minor rim bruise off the bust tip and another under the shoulder, and neither mark is at all distracting. This variant of the Washington Born Virginia Cent is extremely rare and remains unpriced in the "Redbook." Only three examples are known, and this example is the finest of the group by a significant margin. One of the three is impounded in the Massachusetts Historical Society and this may be the only example in private hands today. A great candidate for a superior collection of early American coinage. Comes with a significant provenance. Weight 174.1 grains, 30.2mm diameter. The only example graded at both services. Estimate Value $180,000 - UP
Ex Waldo C. Newcomer-Virgil Brand-New Netherlands Coin Co.-Norweb Family Collection, Stack's 11/2006:2023.
