1823 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Ugly 3. AU-50. Similar to the noteworthy 3 on the O-101 variety, this obverse die takes a turn for the worse with a downright ugly 3. Examination of the 3 shows engraving slips, bumps and lumps with the result nothing short of ugly. The coin itself it anything but, with light golden shades over silvery-gray fields that are still reflective in the protected areas. There is a double profile on Liberty's chest and neck. Minor surface marks and a few fresh scratches on the central high devices, as seen on many coins from this group. Nicely struck and popular with collectors.
