Lot 994

1823 Capped Bust Half Dollar. Patched 3. EF-40. One of the downright ugliest date messes created on any die, this 1823 obverse die began as the "broken 3", and after quite a few were struck, the die was reworked and the broken part of the 3 was patched at the center. The result was scarcely better than the original, and the 3 still leans awkwardly to the right, with a broad curl at the top and a knob at the bottom. In particular this coin boasts luster in the fields and lovely original toning around the periphery. Light hairlines from handling, but they are not too detracting.
Estimated Value $100 - 150.
