Lot 714

1811 Capped Bust Dime. 1811 over 9. NGC graded MS-65. While not the first year of issue (that being taken by 1809), this 1811 is very similar. A trickle of 65,180 were coined, most of which entered circulation and stayed for years. Many were subsequently melted when they became worn, others were lost to oblivion. Somehow, this one survived in pristine condition. Not just uncirculated, which is difficult enough to imagine, but in gem condition! The surfaces glow with luster, and we note a delicate gold tone starting to form. Most 1811 dimes were struck after the reverse die shattered, as seen here, but this is still an early enough die state that large sections of the design are not weak or mushy. NGC has graded just 6 this high, with a single coin graded higher, similar at PCGS where they have graded just 2 as MS-65, and 2 a notch higher. In sum, this is likely in the top ten known of the date, and a beauty it is. For the specialist who knows a numismatic classic.
Estimated Value $15,000 - 20,000.
