Lot 2176

1916-S $5 Indian. PCGS graded MS-64. Mintages cooled to 240,000 for 1916 as the United States geared up for World War I. Most of those struck circulated for years before being saved. Of all places, a few bags turned up in El Salvador, and most of these were baggy mint state pieces. Not so here, the surfaces are clean and show few signs of handling. Deep coppery toning melds with the devices, and the Chief's cheek is full and undiminished. Minor handling lines in the fields, but far and away better than most encountered. PCGS has graded 51 this high, with a scant 9 higher of the date.
Estimated Value $4,500 - 5,500.
