Lot 1987

1855. Pattern One cent, J-171, P-196, Rarity-6. Nickel alloy or German silver. Plain edge. . J-171. PCGS graded Proof 63. The composition of this coin is not known, but it is either German silver or a nickel alloy. Judging from the strike, this may be part nickel, which is quite hard and difficult to strike up when compared with softer metals. Minor weakness on the head, claw and feathertips, and on part of the reverse wreath, all of which show evidence of an uneven strike. We note some minor spots around the edges, and light streaky toning on both sides. As to the rarity of this coin, it is the finest graded of just 5 seen by PCGS, so don't hold back if you need this pattern issue. Perhaps a bit rarer than reported?
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,200.

Realized $1,840
