Lot 1498

Carausius, 287-293 AD. AE Antoninianus, Rotomagus mint(?). Excellent lot. Radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right. Reverse: Tutelus standing left, sacrificing over altar, holding cornucopia; barbarized inscription? RIC --, cf. nos. 682-692, for reverse type, none of which seem to have obverse or reverse inscriptions matching this coin. This an unpublished variant? Along with an AE Follis of Maximianus, 1st Reign, 286-305 AD. Laureate head right / Moneta standing left, holding scales and cornucopia. RIC --, cf. no. 120b, seemingly not listed with these mint marks. Carausius on oblong flan, but with very good portrait, and choice deep apple green patina. Maximianus crisply struck on round flan, of choice metal. Lot of 2 coins. First Choice Very Fine; second, Extremely Fine plus.
Estimated Value $175 - 250.
