Lot 977

1892. PCGS graded Proof 66+. PQ. Boldly struck with wonderful rainbow toning which spans from vibrant blue in the fields and devices, changing over to russet-gold at the centers, and lighter iridescence closer to the rims. This toning is perfectly matched and balanced on both sides. A coin which offers exceptional eye appeal. The 1892 Barber coinage was launched on the dime, quarter and half dollar, with the obverse dies all of the same design. The reverse of the dime continued the same as seen on the prior Liberty Seated design since 1860. Mint Engraver Charles E Barber used the mirror image of the Morgan design of the silver dollar obverse (1878) for the head of Liberty, and cropped her hair in the back, and placed the balance of her hair beneath a large cap. This coin should be called PR67. Only 1,245 proofs struck. Pop 2; 55 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 5678) Estimate Value $3,000 - UP
