Lot 961

1843. PCGS graded Proof 64. Needle sharp and lightly toned with a blush of pale gold.An extremely rare early proof issue, these were struck at irregular intervals in the 1840s, with some years producing no proofs at all, others just a couple. Sometimes 10 or so were struck, and all are desirable today. A few decades later, proof coin production became far more prolific, with mintages in the 100s or even 1000s for most copper and silver denominations. Compare that to a coin like this with only 10 struck, with about 6 to 8 examples estimated to have survived by PCGS Pop Report. Pop 2; 2 finer, 1 in 64+, 1 in 65. (PCGS # 5537) Estimate Value $25,000 - UP
