Lot 928

1844. NGC graded MS-64. A very popular date which was subject to an early example of media hype. A collector named Frank Ross, many decades ago, noticed the small mintage of this date and decided to hoard as many as he could find. Years later Ross began to promote the date, going so far as to give it a name--the "Little Orphan Annie" dime after the famed comic strip character. As collector demand increased, Ross slowly sold off portions of his hoard of 1844 dimes for a welcome profit. This hoard has now been broken up many years ago. However, the name of Little Orphan Annie stuck and is still used to this day. Semi reflective obverse fields. Only 72,000 struck. Pop 3; 1 finer in 65. Estimate Value $15,000 - UP
