Lot 927

1837 Lg Date. No Stars. PCGS graded Proof 63. CAC. PQ. Boldly struck with lovely well matched blue toning on both sides. Very popular coin as this is a short lived type, with the No Stars obverse seen only in late 1837 until the opening months of 1838. Mint Engraver Christian Gobrecht adopted Thomas Sully's design of Liberty seated on a rock and holding a pole with the cap of freedom at the top. The reverse design was a simple open laurel wreath with fruit, ONE / DIME at the center, and surrounded by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. To celebrate this new design perhaps 30 were struck in Proof, and this is one of those prized examples. 25 to 30 known in proof. Pop 7; 13 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 4718) Estimate Value $8,500 - 9,000
