Lot 917

1802. PCGS graded MS-60. Nicely toned on both sides. This is the needle beak variety so named for the long pointed beak on the eagle, which actually pierces the nearby star (caused by an engravor's slip when engraving this die). This is the JR-4 variety of the year, and is considered to be the most common 1802 dime variety--if common can be associated with this elusive date! The strike is a trifle soft on the central culrls of Liberty's head and the junction of the right wing and shield just opposite, this striking feature is diagnostic to this variety. A condition rarity at this level. Only 10,975 struck. Pop 1; 6 finer, 2 in 61, 4 in 62. (PCGS # 4472) Estimate Value $25,000 - UP
