Goldberg Coins and Collectibles

Sale 109

Lot 865

1867. Rays. NGC graded MS-66. Well struck, untoned and fully lustrous. These early Shield nickels are seldom found so well struck and preserved. The Mint had some issues with the rays in the design of the reverse, as these caused the dies to crack quickly with all their intricate die work. Once the rays were removed from the design, the dies did last longer. Here is one of the finer examples from this initial style that includes the rays in the reverse design. Pop 12; 3 finer, 1 in 66 PL, 1 in 66+, 1 in 67. Estimate Value $6,000 - UP
